Insomnia, anxiety and depression are growing problems in Lithuania. Comparing 2014 and 2019 The proportion of people experiencing mild, moderate or severe symptoms of depression increased from 12.4% in 2007 to 12.4% in 2010. to 17.9%. After 2019, emotional health has been affected by the pandemic, quarantine, the war in Ukraine and other global unrest, and may be even worse now. However, the alarmingly changing statistics are providing a significant impetus for the search for innovative solutions, one of which is the non-medication treatment of cranial electrostimulation, which helps to overcome insomnia, anxiety and depression without the use of drugs.

Emotional storms and brain waves

Although cranial electrostimulation may sound unexpected and complicated, the therapy is simple, natural, non-invasive and suitable for virtually anyone experiencing symptoms of insomnia, anxiety and depression. The word “cranial” (derived from the Greek “kranion” – skull) means that the therapy affects the brain, while “electrostimulation” means that the brain is stimulated by an electric current. During the procedure, a unique electric current is generated by a special medical device called Alpha-Stim, which reaches and affects our brain through electrodes attached to our ears.

The human brain has 15-33 billion neurons that communicate with each other using electrical signals. These signals are measured in frequencies and are called brain waves. Wave frequencies reflect the state of the brain: in deep sleep, delta waves (0-4 Hz) dominate, in shallow sleep theta waves (4-8 Hz), in a state of calm and relaxation, alpha waves (8-14 Hz) dominate, in a state of focus and concentration, the brain works in beta waves (14-30 Hz), and in times of fear, anxiety and stress, gamma waves (35-130 Hz) take over.

Alpha-Stim cranial electrostimulation - a new and effective treatment option

The mission of cranial electrostimulation is to influence and balance the brain waves in a way that relieves anxiety, fears, stress, relaxation, well-being and positivity. The Alpha-Stim machine delivers a unique current to the brain, stimulating alpha waves of 8-12 Hz, which are associated with calmness, relaxation and well-being. Studies using electroencephalography (EEG) have shown that the Alpha-Stim procedure suppresses gamma waves in the brain, while alpha waves become more prevalent.

Although cranial electrostimulation is still a new therapy in Lithuania, it has been actively used worldwide, especially in the United States, for several decades. Over 150 scientific studies have been carried out in various countries to prove the effectiveness of Alpha-Stim therapy in treating insomnia, anxiety and depression. In the studies (2500 patients) followed up, the reduction in insomnia was 94%, in anxiety 90%, in depression 87%, in the combination of anxiety and depression 95% and in pain 93%.

Visible results from the first use

Insomnia is usually reduced after the initial treatment, but treatment can take up to 4 weeks to achieve a greater effect. The procedure can also be performed when you wake up at night. Anxiety reduction is usually already felt during the treatment, and is manifested in a state of freedom and relaxation. After a treatment session, this condition usually persists for about 12-72 hours.

Treatment for depression usually lasts at least 3 weeks, with daily treatments. When symptoms improve, Alpha-Stim® is used 2-3 times a week or less. This is usually enough to maintain good results. Cranial electrostimulation has the great advantage of being painless, non-addictive, non-addictive, side-effect-free and, thanks to its convenience and simplicity, it can be used both in the treatment room and at home.

Alpha-Stim also treats pain

Two versions of the medical device have been developed: the Alpha-Stim AID and the Alpha-Stim M. The latter, the Alpha-Stim M, is a more versatile device, as in addition to treating insomnia, anxiety and depression, it also treats acute pain with two therapies: cranial electrostimulation (CES) and microcurrent electrotherapy (MET). Meanwhile, Alpha-Stim AID treats insomnia, anxiety and depression using cranial electrical stimulation (CES).

Features of the procedure

Although the procedure is natural, painless and practically free of side effects, it should be noted that it is not applicable to pregnant women or people with implanted pacemakers or defibrillators. If a person cannot receive cranial electrostimulation, all is not lost. Interestingly, it is possible to learn how to change the frequency of brain waves on your own, through meditation. Japanese neurophysiologist Tomio Hirai conducted a study with Zen masters and students. The results showed that the students’ brains generated alpha waves of 10-12 Hz during meditation, while the masters’ brains generated alpha waves of 7-8 Hz, which is the level of theta waves associated with shallow sleep.
