Anxiety, insomnia, and depression are common health problems that more and more people are facing these days. The prevalence of these disorders has increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the recent tensions in the war in Ukraine continue to create conditions for their development. Even if we have not yet faced these psychological challenges ourselves, we often know at least one person who has such problems.

Instead of medication, balancing brain activity

Although there are currently quite a few non-drug treatments, patients usually associate insomnia, anxiety or depression with the use of prescription medications and are afraid of their side effects. They fear that the medications may not suit them, that they will have difficulty tolerating them due to the peculiarities of their body or concomitant diseases, that they may get used to the medications or that they will have to limit certain activities – driving a car or working with mechanisms. Few people know that there are also non-drug treatments for insomnia, anxiety or depression. One of these, which is widely used in the world, but is still relatively new and little known in Lithuania, is cranial electrostimulation with the “Alpha-Stim®” device.

Alpha-Stim® is a clinically proven medical device used for brain electrical stimulation. During the procedure, a unique and patented microcurrent of a special configuration is transmitted to the brain through ear electrodes, which harmoniously balances the activity of delta, alpha, theta and other brain waves.

It has been scientifically proven that the microcurrent transmitted by the Alpha-Stim® device stimulates alpha waves in the brain at a frequency of 8–12 Hz, which are associated with calmness, relaxation and well-being. Therefore, after the procedure, mood, sleep quality and duration naturally improve, and symptoms of anxiety, insomnia and depression decrease. Patients experience a feeling of calmness, relaxation, increased mental focus and improved well-being.

What is worth knowing about the procedure

Alpha-Stim® is a compact and lightweight medical device that is typically used in private doctors' offices, clinics or hospitals, rehabilitation centers, but is also perfect for self-treatment at home. The procedure is simple, so the patient can perform it themselves.

The procedure lasts from 20 to 60 minutes. There are no physical restrictions before, during and after the procedure. Alpha-Stim® therapy can be used alone, in combination with other treatments, and in combination with medication. It has no risk of drug interactions or significant side effects, is not addictive, and overdose is impossible. The therapy is well tolerated and painless, and the effects are fast and long-lasting.

What to expect from treatment?

Anxiety relief is usually seen after just one treatment session. The effect lasts from a few hours to a few days. Insomnia usually improves after the initial treatment, but it may take up to 4 weeks for the full effect to be achieved. The treatment can also be performed while waking up at night. Depression treatment usually lasts at least 3 weeks with daily treatment. Once symptoms improve, Alpha-Stim® is used 2-3 times a week or less. This is usually sufficient to maintain good results.

In the studies of patients (2500 patients participated) who received this treatment, insomnia decreased by 94 percent, anxiety by 90 percent, depression by 87 percent, a combination of anxiety and depression by 95 percent, and pain by 93 percent.

Over the past few decades, numerous clinical studies have been conducted that have proven that cranial electrical stimulation with the Alpha-Stim® device is a completely safe, effective and unparalleled treatment. It is widely used in the United States and other countries in medical institutions, psychiatric hospitals, veterans' medical centers, and cancer institutes. Thousands of people have tried Alpha-Stim® therapy and use this device in their homes.

Treats pain too

Two versions of the medical device have been developed: Alpha-Stim® AID and Alpha – Stim® M, which is more versatile because in addition to insomnia, anxiety and depression, it also affects acute pain and uses two types of therapies – cranial electrical stimulation (CES) and microcurrent electrotherapy (MET). Meanwhile, Alpha-Stim® AID treats insomnia, anxiety and depression using the cranial electrical stimulation (CES) method.

Cranial electrostimulation therapy with Alpha-Stim® devices is already being used by various Lithuanian medical institutions in Vilnius, Kaunas, Palanga, Neringa, Druskininkai, Birštonas, Abromiškės, Marijampolė, Panevėžys, Šilalė, Tauragė and other cities.
