Insomnia, anxiety and depression are increasingly pressing problems in Lithuania. Comparing the data from 2014 and 2019, the proportion of people experiencing mild, moderate or severe symptoms of depression increased from 12,4 percent to 17,9 percent. After 2019, the emotional health situation was affected by the pandemic, quarantine, war in Ukraine, and other unrest in the world, so the situation may be even worse now. However, the threateningly changing statistics are becoming a significant impetus for the search for innovative solutions, one of which is non-drug treatment with cranial electrostimulation, which allows you to overcome insomnia, anxiety and depression without the use of drugs.
Although cranial electrical stimulation may sound unexpected and complex, the therapy is simple, natural, non-invasive, and suitable for virtually anyone dealing with symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and depression. The word "cranial" (derived from the Greek. cranium – skull) means that the therapy affects the brain, and electrostimulation says that it is stimulated with an electric current. So, during the procedure, a special medical device called “Alpha-Stim” generates a unique electric current, which reaches and affects our brain through electrodes attached to the ears.
The human brain contains 15-33 billion neurons that communicate with each other using electrical signals. These signals are measured in frequencies and are called brain waves. The frequencies of the waves reflect the state of the brain: during deep sleep, delta waves (0-4 Hz) predominate in the brain, during light sleep – theta waves (4-8 Hz), in a state of calm and relaxation, alpha waves (8-14 Hz) dominate, when concentration and focus are needed, the brain works in beta wave mode (14-30 Hz), and when feeling fear, anxiety, stress, gamma waves (35-130 Hz) take over.
The mission of cranial electrical stimulation is to influence and balance brain waves so that a person gets rid of anxiety, fear, stress, relaxes, feels good and positive. The unique current transmitted by the Alpha-Stim device affects the brain and stimulates alpha waves of 8-12 Hz frequency, which are associated with calming, relaxation and well-being. During research, it was found that after the Alpha-Stim procedure, gamma waves are suppressed in the brain and alpha waves prevail.
Although cranial electrical stimulation is still a new type of therapy in Lithuania, it has been actively used in the world, especially in the United States, for several decades. Over 150 scientific studies have been conducted in various countries, which prove the effectiveness of "Alpha-Stim" therapy in treating insomnia, anxiety and depression. During the studies, patients (2500 patients) who were treated with this treatment, insomnia decreased by 94 percent, anxiety - by 90 percent, depression - by 87 percent, a combination of anxiety and depression - by 95 percent, pain - by 93 percent.
Insomnia usually decreases after the initial treatment, but to achieve a greater effect, treatment may take up to 4 weeks. The procedure can also be performed after waking up at night. The decrease in anxiety is usually felt during the procedure, it manifests itself as a state of freedom and relaxation. After the treatment session, this state usually lasts for about 12-72 hours.
Depression treatment usually lasts at least 3 weeks, with the procedure performed daily. When symptoms improve, Alpha-Stim® is used 2-3 times a week or less. This is usually enough to maintain good results. The great advantage is that cranial electrical stimulation is painless, does not cause addiction, has no side effects, and due to its convenience and simplicity, it can be applied both in a medical institution and at home.
Two versions of the medical device have been developed: Alpha-Stim AID and Alpha-Stim M. The latter, Alpha-Stim M, is a more versatile device because, in addition to insomnia, anxiety, and depression, it also treats acute pain and uses two types of therapy: cranial electrical stimulation (CES) and microcurrent electrotherapy (MET). Meanwhile, Alpha-Stim AID treats insomnia, anxiety, and depression using the cranial electrical stimulation (CES) method.

Although the procedure is natural, painless and has practically no side effects, it should be noted that it is not suitable for pregnant women and people with implanted pacemakers or defibrillators. If a person cannot be treated with cranial electrostimulation, all is not lost. An interesting fact is that the frequency of brain waves can be learned to change independently, through meditation. Japanese neurophysiologist Tomio Hirai conducted a study with Zen masters and students. The results revealed that the students' brains generated alpha waves with a frequency of 10 -12 Hz during meditation, while the masters' brains generated a current with a frequency of 7-8 Hz, which is attributed to the theta wave level, which is associated with light sleep.
