Anxiety, insomnia, depression – these are common health problems that more and more people are experiencing these days. The scale of these disruptions was particularly accentuated during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the tensions of the recent war in Ukraine continue to create the conditions for their development. Even if we haven’t yet faced these psychological challenges ourselves, we often know at least one person with such problems.

Balancing brain activity instead of medication

Although there are now a number of non-medication treatments available, patients often associate insomnia, anxiety or depression with prescription drugs and fear their side effects. They fear that the medicines may not be suitable for them, that they may find it difficult to tolerate them because of their body characteristics or comorbidities, that they may become accustomed to the medicines, or that they may have to restrict certain activities such as driving a car or working with machinery. Few people know that there are also non-medicated treatments for insomnia, anxiety or depression. One of them, which is widely used in the world, but is still quite new and little known in Lithuania, is cranial electrostimulation with the Alpha-Stim® device.

Alpha-Stim® is a clinically approved medical device used for electrical stimulation of the brain. During the procedure, a unique and patented microcurrent with a special configuration is transmitted to the brain via ear electrodes, which harmoniously balances the activity of delta, alpha, theta and other brain waves.

The Alpha-Stim® microcurrent has been scientifically proven to stimulate alpha waves in the brain at 8-12 Hz, which are associated with calmness, relaxation and well-being. As a result, the treatment naturally improves mood, sleep quality and duration, and reduces symptoms of anxiety, insomnia and depression. Patients experience a sense of calm, relaxation, increased mental concentration and improved well-being.

What to know about the procedure

The Alpha-Stim® is a compact and lightweight medical device that is commonly used in private doctor’s offices, clinics or hospitals, rehabilitation centres, but is also ideal for self-treatment at home. The procedure is simple, so the patient can do it himself.

The procedure takes between 20 and 60 minutes. There are no physical restrictions before, during and after the procedure. Alpha-Stim® therapy can be used alone, in combination with other therapies, and also in combination with medical treatment. It has no risk of drug-drug interactions and no significant side effects, is non-addictive and cannot be overdosed. The therapy is well tolerated and painless, and the effects are quick and long-lasting.

What to expect from treatment?

A reduction in anxiety is usually seen after just one treatment. The effect lasts from a few hours to a few days. Insomnia is usually reduced after the initial treatment, but treatment may take up to 4 weeks to achieve a greater effect. The procedure can also be performed when you wake up at night. Treatment for depression usually lasts at least 3 weeks with daily treatments. When symptoms improve, Alpha-Stim® is used 2-3 times a week or less. This is usually enough to maintain good results.

In the studies (2500 patients), the treatment reduced insomnia by 94%, anxiety by 90%, depression by 87%, a combination of anxiety and depression by 95% and pain by 93%.

Over the past few decades, numerous clinical studies have shown that cranial electrostimulation with the Alpha-Stim® device is a completely safe, effective and unparalleled treatment. It is widely used in medical institutions in the USA and other countries, in psychiatric hospitals, war veterans’ medical centres and cancer institutes. Thousands of people have tried Alpha-Stim® therapy and use it in their homes.

Treats pain too

Two versions of the medical device have been developed: the Alpha-Stim® AID and the Alpha – Stim® M, which is more versatile as it addresses acute pain, in addition to insomnia, anxiety and depression, and offers two types of therapy: cranial electrostimulation (CES) and microcurrent electrotherapy (MET). Meanwhile, Alpha-Stim® AID treats insomnia, anxiety and depression using cranial electrical stimulation (CES).

Cranial electrostimulation therapy with Alpha-Stim® devices is already used in various Lithuanian medical institutions in Vilnius, Kaunas, Palanga, Neringa, Druskininkai, Birštonas, Abromiskes, Marijampolė, Panevėžys, Šilalė, Tauragė, and other towns.
